Little Acts of Kindness can make your day

Saturday, 25 July 2009 20:49

Whilst I was out running this morning, I witnessed an act of kindness that made me smile and made me want to perform my own little act of kindness.

It was a beautiful morning for a run - the sun was shining, the birds were singing and I was plodding.  I am always amazed at how from day to day the time my run takes can vary by a minute or even more.  I can tell as soon as I head off whether it will be a fast one or a bit more of a slog.  I love the fast ones (fast for me anyway) where it almost feels effortless.  Anyway, I digress.

I was jogging along Payneham Road, lost in my own thoughts, when something caught my attention.  A man in a dark blue stationwagon was pulling up to an elderly man that was walking along carrying a petrol can.  The man in the car called out of his window that he could take the elderly man to the nearest service station.  That is all I saw.

The man in the car had obviously seen the elderly man with the petrol can from the other side of the road and had done a U-turn to see if he could help him.  As he pulled up alongside the man, a passing car beeped at him, obviously in such a rush on this beautiful Saturday morning that he could not spare a couple of seconds.  I almost felt sorry for the beeper - he did not get to see this lovely little act of kindness.  I wished him well and happy.  Don't get me wrong, there have been many times when I have been the person in the car rushing along.

I looked back and did not see the elderly man, so I presume that he took up the offer.  I could not stop smiling afterwards.  Witnessing this act of kindness had made my day.

It got me to reflecting on how it really is the little things that count.  We can be so busy with our busy lives.  I wonder if any of the passing cars noticed this act of kindness and whether it made them want to perform their own act of kindness.  I was jogging along with a silly smile on my face and a lady that was standing alongside the road smiled back and said "hello".  What a lovely morning - I felt a nice sense of community.

It reminded me of my Victory Log.  In my book, Doing It with Love!, one of the things that I suggest is to keep a journal.  I also did a blog a while ago about keeping a journal and how great it is to help your child start their own journal.

I try and write in my journal every day.  I write about my day, any thoughts I have, any dreams I can remember and an entry that I include every time, which is my Victory Log.

I got the idea from one of Joshua David Stone's books.  His idea is that we so often focus on what we are not doing well and that it is important to reflect on all the good things we have done in our lives.  He gives an exercise where you sit and write down all the good things you have done in your whole life.  I found this a bit difficult to do.

But for me it is easy to reflect on my day and think of one nice thing that I have done.  I could not bear to leave my Victory Log blank.

Sometimes I feel a bit like a boy scout trying to do his good deed for the day.  But it works.  And it is often a really simple thing.  Some days I feel a bit desperate - there I am late at night writing in my journal and I cannot think of one nice thing I have done.  Then I think 'oh well, I better go over to Herby and say something nice to him'.  Not such a bad thing after all.

I tend to think of my encounters with other people in my life when thinking of entries for my Victory Log but isn't it important to be nice to the people that we love.

So thank you stationwagon man for your little act of kindness today.  I wonder how many other acts of kindness you have inspired.  I also wonder if I can include this thank you as my Victory Log entry.

Hi Mary,

I went to see my daughters best friend get christened at a Uniting Church. As this girl is going to a Catholic School the church did a Catholic ceremony. The minister explained that we are all on the one earth and so they were happy to christen in another faith.
I thought this was lovely. Later in a reading he said to all of us attending to try and do an act of kindness in the following week. What a great thing to suggest.
Your blog is telling me to do it also.
Amazing to get this message twice in one week.

Love Nancy

Hi Nancy
It is lovely to hear from you - thank you for sharing your story.
Knowing you, I know that you do lots of acts of kindness.
Little acts of kindness can be fun too - on Sunday night I freaked my dad out by giving him 3 kisses for no reason.
I cant think of what to write tonight for my Victory Log - bugger I might have to say something nice to Herby when he gets home from the gym.

I am going to include here my favourite act of kindness of the week. I would love to hear about your favourite act of kindness.

My first one is an act of kindness that I received. Last week I heard a snippet of Turn Me Loose by Loverboy on the radio. I mentioned to Herby that I loved the song. That night he had searched his CD collection and in the morning the CD was sitting by my computer. How sweet!

I am wondering whether I have over-committed myself by saying that I would include my favourite act of kindness each week. But here I go - I have found that it is easier to talk about other people's acts of kindness. So this is another one that I witnessed.

Luke had a friend visiting who had really liked his green quartz necklace that we had given him for his 5th birthday. During the visit, Luke said he wanted to give him a black jade, as he knew that Saxon liked it. Saxon gave him a really touching thank you - it was so cute seeing these 5 year old boys being so nice to each other.

My little act of kindness for this week is a joint one.

I was out on my run the other morning - usually I have to keep a good eye out for cars when I am crossing streets. Most people just block your way and you need to go around them, some people seem to actually want to hit you and others are just plain distracted.

So I was pleasantly surprised when a man in a four wheel drive stopped short so that I had plenty of space to cross. I gave him a wave and a smile and he gave me a lovely smile back.

Hello, I witnessed an act of natural instincts / kindness this morning...I was on the bus going to work, and a father and daughter were getting off on the next stop, the daughter dressed in her pink tutu started to tumble, and a lovely young man, saw and naturally stuck his hand to prevent the fall...Both the Father and daughter smiled and went on their way....cute...Suzi xx

This week's little act of kindness shows that we can all learn something when we listen.

Luke had an appointment with our naturopath - a lovely man called George. George mentioned that he wouldn't give Luke any herbs as they don't taste very nice and Luke would probably not like to take them. But Luke got interested and asked George what his favourite herb was. Luke then said that he would like to try it.

At the end of the appointment, George gave Luke a gift of a little bottle of Shizandra and told him to have some with water or juice.

We got home and Luke had all his drops and then tried the herbs - straight of course - and loved it! Thanks George.

This week's little act of kindness is from my dad. I was telling him how Luke had had his first transition visit to start school. It has been a big week for us, more than I realised.

Dad said to me that he had cried when I first went to school. This was news to me.

I have heard lots of stories about how much I cried when I went to school. Apparently I didn't just cry, I howled. Dad said it was embarrassing to take me to school because I put on such a performance.

But he had never told me that it had made him cry too.

This week's little act of kindness is from my mum. I was telling her that I had just received some great feedback on my book - it was insightful, thoughtful and constructive feedback.

I mused that people probably only usually give feedback if it is good and mum said 'well it is my favourite book'. She said it so matter of factly but I had no idea - and I was very touched!

The other day I was itching for a run so I asked Luke if he would ride his bike along side me while I did my run.

It is a bit of an ask for a 5 year old - about 6 kms at a reasonable pace non-stop. It is not really his idea of a fun bike ride but he said yes and we did it. It was one of my fastest times too - 32.22 - and lots of fun. Thanks Luke.

Luke had his first day at school yesterday. It was a big day for everyone - we were excited and nervous.

There was a child in his class that was crying and his mother was finding it hard to leave him. I was feeling very emotional as well and gave her a hug and we had a quick chat. She said it made her feel better and I could see that it did - and it made me feel good too.

It is so hard to leave your child when they are crying.

It was Emma's 7th birthday last week. I cannot believe it has been 7 years. We went to the cemetery as a family on her birthday.

A lovely new friend sent me a card on her birthday. It means an awful lot to me.

Thanks Donna.

This week's little act of kindness is a very yummy one. I told mum that I had been thinking about a lovely stew that she makes called paprikash that is very delicious and that I wanted to write down the recipe.

When we visited last week, mum had some made for us to take home - it was very, very tasty.

Thanks mum.

My little act of kindness for this week is from a lovely customer. She had bought a necklace for her step-daughter's birthday. She texted me to let me know that she loved her Jade necklace and hasn't taken it off.

Oh joy! I love receiving comments like that.

Yesterday Luke and I were looking through the World Vision Smiles Catalogue. We decided that this year we would choose to gift a duck and a chicken and chicken feed.

After some thought Luke said he would also like to send a bag of seeds and that he would contribute ten dollars out of his own money for this gift. What a lovely boy!

If you have not done it before, it is a lovely thing to do at Christmas time.

My gorgeous sister Suzi gave a Rose Quartz necklace to the student that she mentors, for her birthday. Suzi was so excited to give it to her and her gift was received with a squeal of delight and promptly put on.

How wonderful!

It was my birthday last week and I received a card from a friend that I haven't seen for a while. It had a lovely quote on the front "to have joy one must share it" by Lord Byron and she wrote a lovely message.

Nothing quite beats a handwritten note or letter that shows the care and thought that was put into it..

I love giving and receiving Christmas cards - this is a fairly new thing for me and I know I am going against the trend.

My favourite card so far has been from our sponsored child, Yamin. It had these beautiful words "May your holidays be filled with music .... And your heart be filled with love".

I hurt my foot last Sunday after my swim. I was clumsy and not looking where I was going. I very rarely get injured and when I do my approach is laissez faire.

But when I got home my husband had a look at it and said to ice it - he arranged the couch for me and wrapped the ice around my foot. It actually wasn't too bad. I could barely walk on my foot but after a couple of days it was much better. I am sure that icing my foot really helped my recovery. I haven't been able to run this week but I could still do my Nia Dance DVD.

I am looking forward to my run tomorrow though - thanks to my ice man.

Yesterday I was at the pool doing my swim - it was absolutely divine! Just as I got out the pool the lovely lady in the lane next to me called me over and said to look at the amazing colour of the sky and the sun light shining on the palm trees. We were both entranced and so obviously enjoying our swims.

I think I will have to do more backstroke, like my fellow swimmer, so that I can notice the sky more.

The other day we were out in the car driving to the gym for a hit of racketball and a swim. Luke and I were sitting in the back as we often do, having a bit of a chit chat. I can't remember what we were talking about but at one stage he put his little hand on top of mine and I was captivated.

He did is so naturally and it gave me so much joy! At that moment I thought that I must be the happiest person alive.

I had my first tennis lesson last week - I was so excited. But then Luke was a bit unwell and I thought it best that he not go to school. I was going to cancel my lesson but Luke said he would be happy to sit and watch me.

And he did - he was so amazing - he had some paper and textas and his Etch-A-Sketch and drew a lovely picture of me playing tennis. He also watched me and gave me some pointers afterwards. What an unreal boy - pretty fantastic for a 5 year old who is used to being the one playing. Thank you Luke.

They say that we all have a book in us - I think we all have a unique story to tell and I believe that we all are on journeys worth writing about. I know how daunting it can seem but I would love to help people write their life stories. I will be writing a blog soon on The Life and Times of the Most Amazing Person in the World.

And this week we got started on mum's book - it is very exciting - she has always wanted to write her life story and I really love that I am helping her to do it.

I got a lovely email the other day from a lovely person that had been lent my book, Doing It with Love! She said that a friend had lent her my book last night and she was emailing me the next day.

She said that reading my book came at the right time and she thanked me for sharing my journey, which she found both emotional and inspiring. It was such a sincere and thoughtful email - I could ask for nothing more - thank you!

Michelle from Gypsy Rose Creations bought a crystal and my book and sent me a lovely email about how much she liked the website. She even gave me a plug on her blog.

Michelle makes handmade gemstone jewellery so I was flattered that she wanted to buy an Earth Goddess necklace and struck by her sharing and generous spirit. Check out her blog at www.gypsyrosecreati ons.blogspot.com.

I was getting quite uptight this afternoon trying to cook (not one of my strengths). It was something I had not made before, I had made a huge mess in the kitchen and then I saw a bug in the kitchen to top it all off.

For the last week or so, Luke and I have been practising on the piano, just for 5 minutes or so. I asked Luke to play me some music to calm me down and he played a bit of Ode to Joy. He played the couple of bars a few times for me and I felt much better. What a wonderful boy!

It was absolutely pouring with rain on Monday morning and I was contemplating whether to go out for my run. Herby said I would be crazy to go out but Luke said that I should go and that I would get a Persistent Pete badge if I did.

Who could resist that? I had a fantastic run in the rain. Thanks Luke.

I know I sound like a doting mum at the moment but I get so many wonderful acts of kindness from my gorgeous boy Luke.

I was telling Luke that I was going to get a job to supplement my income while Earth Goddess is still growing. I was looking through the paper and Luke said he had a great idea for a job that I would be really good at - he said I could go to hospitals to cheer up the children there as I was so happy.

I could not ask for a better reference.

I received a lovely email from a woman from SANDS (Still Birth and Neonatal Death Support). SANDS provides support to people affected by the death of a baby. They wanted to buy 2 of my books for their libraries.

They gave me lovely feedback on my book - it meant a lot to me. I gave the copies to them by way of thank you for the wonderful work they do.

This morning I was listening to Luke and his friend Youwon read a book before school was about to start. It is a little ritual that we have recently started when we arrive at school. This morning Tyson asked if he could join in. They took turns reading a page each. What wonderful boys! How cool that they want to read - it makes my heart sing!

I am the class parent rep for Luke's reception class and I organised a class catch up during the school holidays. We had a really lovely time. Thank you to all the parents that responded to my email about the catch up and thanked me for organising it. It is the little acts of kindness that make these sorts of things a pleasure to do.

It was Emma's birthday on Saturday - 8 years - and this year for the first time we decided to have a little disco party and some chocolate cake, and it was really nice. The flowers, phone calls and messages from family and friends are also much appreciated and valued.

The other day I was cuddling Luke in bed and the first thing he said to me when he woke up was 'Good morning mummy, I really admire how kind you are' - how blissful!

Last week I got my dream car - a green Saab convertible. It had seemed so out of reach but wha-la, here it is. All I had to do was allow it and everything came together to make it happen - amazing! It is almost the same colour as the website and I think it is the perfect car for an earth goddess.

A few weeks ago my best friend from high school contacted me on Facebook and I am so glad that she did. I still think she is as wonderful as I did when we were 12.

So many to choose from this week. Luke and I have been reading these wonderful Sara books that are absolutely amazing. We had just finished Book 1 and my sister came over for a visit and Luke suggested that she might like to borrow the book as he knows how much Suzi likes reading. She read it in a week and said it was exactly what she needed.

Oops, I forgot to do an entry last week - it was my birthday - 43 is an interesting number. Luke made me an amazing robot. He has made me a robot for the last three birthdays and they are wonderful.

I can't resist this one. Luke and Herby were having a wrestle and then Luke said afterwards 'My life would be miserable without you dad, who would I bash'. He also gets lots of kisses and cuddles.

I have these amazing Vortex meditations that are such a pleasure to do that I can't wait to do them - and I want to do them more than once a day - thanks Abraham!

I am going to start a new blog for the next year - I have been doing these little acts of kindness entries for about a year and a half and it has been wonderful. It really reminds me how many acts of kindness are all around me every day.
