Wonderful books to read with your children

Wednesday, 13 April 2011 22:48

sara_book_1.jpgI absolutely love reading.  I also absolutely love reading books with my son, Luke.  I am always on the look out for interesting books to read with him.  We have read some amazing books lately that I would love to share with you.

We have always loved reading together and we have a bookshelf full of Little Golden Books, Doctor Seuss books and the like.  Luke is 7 years old and we can now read books that don't have a lot of pictures in them.

Our absolute favourites last year were the Sara series of books by Esther and Jerry Hicks (The Teachings of Abraham).  We are actually reading them again at the moment, in between Zac Power books.

I confess I absolutely love Abraham.  When I first read their book last year called Ask and It is Given, it was like coming home.  I love their sense of humour, the way they call death 'croaking' and their message - that life is supposed to be fun, we came for the thrill of the ride and to relax and enjoy the unfolding.

sara_books.jpgThere are three Sara books so far:

Sara Book 1 - Sara Learns the Secret about the Law of Attraction - An inspired narrative of a child's experential journey into the knowingness that all is well (it really is);

Sara Book 2 - Solomon's Fine Featherless Friends - A fresh, fast-paced, fun-filled adventure in wisdom ... a giant step in your journey of becoming;

Sara Book 3 - A Talking Owl is Worth a Thousand Words - A remarkable new way of looking at some old ways of having fun!

The books are about a girl called Sara who meets an ethereal owl named Solomon.  These books are absolutely delicious!  We had so many times while reading these books, where we were so joyful and in absolute delight with big grins on our faces.

Luke enjoyed them as much as I did.  There are only a few black and white pictures in the books but he didn't seem to mind.

I have a couple of other Abraham books, which are wonderful, but these books are so powerful in how they describe the Law of Attraction at work.  I had lots of moments where I got things on a different level because it was being demonstrated in a real life context.

We went on an incredible journey with Sara as she discovers how to create a happier life for herself.  Just after we had finished reading them I was stressed out about something and Luke said to me 'mum, remember all is well' - pretty cool.  And then I did remember.

If you want some delicious books to read with your children, you will be sure to love them.  I got them from www.abraham-hickslawofattraction.com.  You can get all three books for $30.

Re-reading Book 1 has reminded me about spraying my hose of appreciation and Luke has recently suggested that we say these words every night - I am going to keep my valve open anyway.

I told Luke that I was going to write a blog about the Sara books and asked if there was anything he wanted to add.  He thought for a moment and said 'I am really inspired by how confident Sara is'.

There is one bit in Book 1 that has stuck in my mind - there is a new boy, Donald, who gets laughed at when he stands up in front of the class with his red plastic pencil box.  Sara realises that it has been the critical turning point for Donald.  If he had been able to handle that first moment differently, perhaps standing bravely and grinning back, not caring what the rotten class thought about him, maybe things could have gotten off on a different foot.  It makes me think that we are all much more powerful than we realise.

Some other books that we have really enjoyed recently are:

  • Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne;
  • The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien (a beautiful illustrated edition);
  • The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

At the moment we are reading a magnificent book called Born to Run, but I will leave that for another blog.
