Home My Blog Words are so powerful!

Words are so powerful!

Friday, 02 October 2009 21:38

Words are powerful.  I have often said these words myself.  Perhaps if we realised how powerful, we would not talk quite so much.

I wanted to share with you an article that I received by email from the website www.selfgrowth.com.   I came across this website a while ago and I have been receiving their emails with articles from experts in various fields for some time now.

Some of the articles have been interesting and made me think.  But this article is one that actually spurred me to action.

The article is by Barbara J Henry and is called 10 Words to Delete from your Vocabulary.  Barbara has obviously chosen her words very carefully because her article is succinct but really gets the message across.  It is all things that we know but are we aware of how much we use these words.

I printed out the article and put the list of words on my fridge.  The day I did it, I realised that I was using the word "should" a lot.  It had worked - I was more aware of the words that I used.  I love easy, practical things we can do and this is a great example.

So here is the list:

  1. Can't - we all know this is not a good word to use.  She recommends eliminating this word and you will see a significant positive change in your life.
  2. But - when used as a conjunction.  Her example is so simple but gets the message across so well.  "I want to study law, but it will take a lot of hard work".  Your mind does not focus on your desire; it only sees the hard work you will need to perform.  Replace "but" with "and" and it feels so different.
  3. Should - this word elicits guilt.  Replace it with "I choose".
  4. Maybe - this word indicates indecision.  Instead use "I will" or "I will not".  The mere sound of the more positive words emits feelings of confidence and resolve which are so important to our personal well-being.  What an easy way to boost our confidence.
  5. Soon or Later - these words are indefinite and non-committal.
  6. Someday - this word shows lack of commitment.
  7. Never - this word is absolute and suggests a closed mind.
  8. Won't - this word implies unwillingness and closed mindedness and it is quite harmful as it closes the door on many of the actions we need to take to reach our goals.
  9. If - this is a small word that carries large doubts and uncertainties and when used often, it gnaws away at our confidence.
  10. Try or I'll Try - when someone says "I'll try" you can bet that it wont happen.

Go to http://www.selfgrowth.com/articles/10_words_to_delete_from_your_vocabulary if you want to have a look at the full article.

I am now more aware of the words that I use.  Do you think the list will find its way to your fridge?

I will end with the following quote by Robert Benchley "Drawing on my fine command of language, I said nothing".

Hi Mary! I usually have more than a few words to say about words - what an awesome topic .. but could this be the perfect context to simply write my most favourite piece of wisdom?
"The greater is our command over language, the sharper are the tools that we have with which to dissect reality."
Love coming back to the blog - its so refreshing & uplifting.
